Tuesday 10th December Y9 Art trip to Arts Depot

Climate Emergency

You may have been following the progress of our Y9 students participating in the Climate Emergency Architecture workshops with Studio Bark.

Having gone through the first 3 stages of the design process: Brief, Design and Build, today they engaged in the 4th and final stage of evaluating their work in the Gallery space at Finchley Arts Depot. Their piece ‘HOPE’ AKA Help Our Planet Earth is displayed alongside work of the two other participating schools.

Students had the opportunity to interact with, reflect on, and share ideas about their own and others responses and to hear how other students interpreted their work.

Throughout the process all students had followed the two rules: look after yourselves and look after each other. These rules underpinned the respectful interaction throughout the process and again as they came together with Y3 and 4 students from the Hyde school and 3 students from Holmewood School.

Three slightly different viewpoints emerged through the work with Holmewood’s Nature destroying Robot providing a stark warning of our actions as a species, The Hyde School’s Greenhouse representing everything we want to protect and keep safe, and the Copthall structure of HOPE representing a call to action and the possibility of change.

As well as reflecting on the outcomes, students were able to identify the skills they had acquired through the process of working as a team, including the challenge of decision making in collaboration. They saw clear evidence of Aristotle’s quote ‘The whole is greater than the sum of its parts’, as a team they had created something that would not have been possible for one individual. Each student could see their own contribution to the work.

The work can be viewed from now until the 3rd January in the Arts Depot Gallery, entry is free every day between 10am and 4pm.
