Copthall School is looking to appoint an energetic and passionate Curriculum Leader of History, Government and Politics to join the school’s thriving team.

History is a popular subject at Copthall, attracting students of all abilities. Results at GCSE are compare favourably with attainment nationally and 75 % of students achieved a grade B or above at A level.  Many of our A Level students go on to study History or a history-related degree at University, including Oxbridge.  The department looks to enrich the students’ knowledge and understanding with extra-curricular trips and speakers.  The department continually strives to reflect on its pedagogical approach and often contributes to school-wide teaching and learning CPD. The school is committed to supporting the subject to grow and develop both in the classroom and through the school’s wider enrichment offer.

The successful candidate will be a well-qualified and highly motivated History specialist who is a strong team player and whose passion for History will inspire and engage our students. As a school we strive to deliver and broad and diverse curriculum. The ability to offer politics at KS5 would be desirable.     

At Key stage 5, there are two classes of Politics students, it is amongst the most popular humanities subjects and the students cite it as being their favourite often. The Politics department is a thriving department which offers a rich and contemporary curriculum, drawn from both academic and real-world inspiration. The broad and diverse curriculum actively engages students and develops their critical thinking, debate and analytical abilities through its lively delivery and wide-ranging content.  Politics is also a popular subject at Copthall, attracting students of all abilities who work together to produce fantastic results and a great atmosphere in lessons. Results compare favourably with attainment nationally 83% of students achieved a grade B or above at A level.  Many of our A Level students go on to study History or Politics or other related degree at University at top flight institutions including UCL, Kings College and Queen Mary.  The department looks to enrich the students’ knowledge and understanding with extra-curricular trips and speakers, including a popular trip to the Houses of Parliament.

Candidates will need to demonstrate:

  • The ability to deliver a consistently high quality of teaching, learning and assessment across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5
  • A proven track record or the potential to secure excellent student outcomes in examinations
  • A commitment to champion our students to ensure that regardless of their starting point, they are able to make excellent progress
  • A commitment to developing curriculum and enrichment activities within the History department
  • The resolve to raise the profile of History, Government and Politics across the school and the wider community
