Welcome to the Beauty Therapy Department
Beauty Therapy is now an established subject here at Copthall School and offers qualifications at Key Stage 4 and 5. With a small team of two tutors, we will be able to guide and support your journey into the Beauty Therapy Industry.
As a Beauty Therapy student, you will learn in a warm and friendly environment, we will ensure that by the time you leave us you will hold an array of life skills that will be valuable in helping you enter the world of work.
Aims and Expectations
At Key Stage 4, students are able to choose Beauty Therapy as an option equivalent to 1 GCSE. You will be graded either Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*.
There will be an equal balance of theory and practical sessions covering nails, hair and make-up over a variety of different decades and eras such as ancient Egypt. We will also look how different trends and techniques have advanced through the years and where trends have taken their inspirations from. Practical sessions will take place in the schools dedicated and fully equipped salon.
It is expected that all learners participate in practical sessions and that all coursework and assignments are completed on time. There will be graded exams at the end of both year 1 and 2 which will contribute to the overall grade.
Students choosing Beauty Therapy at Key Stage 5 will have the privilege of wearing a professional Beauty Therapy uniform during practical sessions and once all the practical elements have been covered, will contribute to the running of the Copthall Salon.
The course you will be undertaking is a 2 year combined Level 3 course and is the equivalent of 2 A levels. You will be graded either a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*.

Facials and Skin Analysis
Anatomy and Physiology Part 1
Health and Safety Part 1
Client care and consultation part 1
Swedish Body Massage
Body Electrical Treatments
Facial Electrical Treatments
Anatomy and Physiology Part 2
Health and Safety Part 2
Client care and consultation part 2
You will be assessed practically at the end of each practical unit and will undertake four theory exams. Two in the first year and two in the second. Each practical and theory exam will be graded P/M/D/D* which will all be collated along with your grade for your practical Synoptic assessment to give you an overall grade.
Although not graded, work experience is an integral part of the course and is also required to be certificated. It is advisable that you start to think about your 5 day placement as soon as possible, although we can help you find a suitable placement if required.
It is expected that all students will undertake work experience and meet all assignment deadlines.
The department offers a wide range of enrichment activities. The students will be offered the chance to visit trade and skills shows, participate in additional training with professional product companies as well as the opportunities to enter the prestigious World Skills UK competition. Students will also be tasked with organising and participating in various wellness events offered to members of the community.
