A Day in the Life of an MYP at the House of Commons

Posted on: 16/11/2017

On November 10th I visited the House of Commons to take part in a debate chaired by the one and only Speaker of the House, John Bercow.  This was as part of my role as Barnet’s UK Youth Parliament representative.  I was there with the hundreds of other young Members of the Youth Parliament (MYPs) from all over the country as we discussed the top five issues voted by the national Make Your Mark campaign.

Sure enough, I got to sit on those green benches where MPs and previous Prime Ministers have sat whilst making the big decisions. The atmosphere in the chamber was astounding, and I felt inspired as I heard all the speakers and the debate. The speech from John Bercow especially made me feel empowered and emphasised how crucial it is for young people to have and use their voices. I believe it was a once in a life time experience as merely being there and having the opportunity to listen to the debate as well as to the numerous speaker’s present was enough to create a memorable day for me.

The top two issues that were voted in are; a curriculum to prepare us for life; and the voting age to be lowered to 16, therefore these are the issues that Barnet borough will aim to run a campaign around this year. I am excited to be involved in causing a greater change and aiding in the campaign this year around the topics voted in. This debate has marked the start of Parliament Week, so I would encourage as many of you as possible to speak out for things that you feel passionately about and hopefully change society for the better.

If you are in Year 9 this opportunity will be open to you after January as my period in office comes to a close.  I would encourage anyone interested in making change happen and who takes opportunities when offered, to join.  Information will be coming soon.
